Justalkin Episode 12: Celebrities we lost to drugs
Everything in this world has a positive and a negative side. Being a celebrity brings with it fame, money and fan-following and a darker side too - the side that deals with the pressures of the demands society places on them, the side that more often than not, leads to destruction - of relationships, of careers and sometimes, of lives. On this episode of Justalkin', we take a look at some of the celebs we lost to drugs.
Behind that rockstar look and the winged eyeliner was a person who had seen difficulties and challenges and who didn't always pick the healthy way of dealing with it. Her struggle with body image and bulimia, and then her dependancy on drugs (as a result of the company she kept or otherwise), all spelt doom for this young artist who died at 27, joining the infamous 27 Club. Ironically, her song "Rehab" talks of her struggle and her refusal to seek help.
She was one of those women in the entertainment industry who had become an icon. Women wanted to emulate her looks - her blonde hair, her hourglass figure and those red lips. But there was more to Marilyn. While her journey is inspiring, her end left people with questions and the conspiracy theories continue to find their way into media. Relationships gone wrong, or just self-medication? What really took the iconic Marilyn Monroe's life?
When a celebrity dies, it leaves a huge number of fans sad, upset and shocked. Mac Miller's sudden death did just that. While Mac had always struggled with substance abuse and even spoke about it openly through his music and his tattoos. With a tour announced and a video shoot scheduled on the day of his death, Mac was definitely gone too soon.
Lights, Camera, Action! Prince was everything an aritst, an entertainer and a celebrity could be. His sense of style impressed as many as it shocked, his talent was there for everyone to see, but there was also a side to him that wasn't all that happy and glittery. One would imagine that being a famous person meant a lot of friends. But do these friends really stand by you? That's a question Prince's family was left with after his death.
One of the things celebrities see very early on in their careers are controversies. Was Jimi Hendrix's death an accident or suicide or foul play? the questions continue, but the reality remains that Jimi died at the age of 27. His talent was so magical that even today, think guitarist and his name is sure to come to mind. From the Army, to being a rockstar to a gone-too-soon celebrity, Jimi Hendrix remains in our hearts through life and death.
Controversies and rumours are part of a celebrity's world - in life and in death. The world's beloved King of Pop left behind shocked fans across the world who just couldn't accept that their idol, the icon was really gone. MJ had a fan-following across the world and his music had quite literally changed lives. A life shrouded by controversy, criticism, identity issues and more - it showed the world the harsher reality of being a star.
You're only as good as your last role. And what a last role he played. Posthumously awarded widely for his performance as the Joker in 'The Dark Knight,' Heath Ledger's death added a sense of eeriness to the character. He was a wreck mentally and barely slept in the days leading to his death. The pressures of the industry, his wrecked personal life and health issues - this was the bigger lethal cocktail that killed him.
He was called "the King" with good reason. His voice, his style and just the persona that Elvis Presley was, all contributed to how the world perceived him. He had the successful music albums, the women fan-following and everything that an artist dreams of. But like with most people, there was a troubled, insecure and weaker side to him. One that took him down the path of self-destruction.
